Buffalo Gap National Grassland — Fairburn Agate Beds (French Creek)
Fairburn agate, South Dakota's state gem, weathers out of these gravels in tight red-and-white fortification bands that collectors chase for decades without turning up a great one. The Forest Service posts a rockhounding guide and a map of five rockhounding locations on this grassland, and no permit is required for personal-use surface collecting. Six paleontological Special Interest Areas — split between the Fall River district here and the Pine Ridge district on Oglala in Nebraska — are closed to casual collecting, so check the map before you wander.
