White Fir Springs Thunderegg Beds

White Fir Springs is two beds about half a mile apart in the Ochocos northeast of Prineville: one drops agate-filled thundereggs, the other the jasper-filled nodules the site is known for. The soil is soft and shallow enough that a shovel and patience beat heavy equipment. The Ochoco National Forest publishes a rockhounding map for exactly this kind of trip — buy it before you go, because the beds are unsigned and the spur roads all look alike under ponderosa. Call the ranger district to confirm the site and road status.
